New Skills Competition




This year we will be holding the skills competition again, on Saturday, Dec 2nd at 1:00pm.

Teams are invited to enter one player from their roster for each of the following events:

  • Fastest Forward Skater
  • Fastest Backward Skater
  • Fastest Agility Skater
  • Best Shooter
  • Best Goalie

All competitions will be held between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm at the following arenas:

  • U10 (@1:15) and U12 (@2:15) - HRM 4-Pad
  • U14 (@1:00) - St. Margaret's Centre Smith
  • U16 and U19 (@1:15) - St. Margaret's Centre Fountain

There will be a prize for the winner in each event. Be sure to come and cheer on your teammates.

 Here are the details for each competition:

Fastest Forward Skater

  1. Athletes will be timed while skating
    • U12, U14, U16/19 - a full lap starting from the centre line and returning to the same point.
    • U10 - the length of the rink.
  2. Athletes must start on or behind the centre line.
  3. Athletes go on the whistle.
  4. 2 athletes skate at the same time, in opposite directions.

Fastest Backwards Skater

  1. Athletes will be timed while skating backwards
    • U14 and U16/19 - for a full lap starting from centre line and returning to the same point.
    • U12 - for one length of the rink.
    • U10 - for half the length of the rink.
  2. Athletes must start on or behind the centre line.
  3. Athletes go on the whistle.
  4. 2 athletes skate at the same time, in opposite directions

Fastest Agility Skater

For U10s, skaters will weave through several pylons in one half of the rink.

For U12, U14, U16/19

  1. Start at goal line beside net.
  2. Forward weaving through pylons 1, 2 and 3.
  3. Complete skate around centre circle.
  4. Around pylon 4, pivot.
  5. Backwards to pylon 5, pivot.
  6. Skate to the opposite goal line.
  7. This is a timed event.

Best Shooter and Best Goalie

  1. Each player gets one shot on each goalie.
  2. Players must always be moving forwards.
  3. The goalie starts on the goal line and cannot challenge until the whistle blows.
  4. The goalie with the most saves wins. The player with the most goals wins.
  5. In the event of a tie between players:
    • Most goals against the top goalie. If the top goalie is from the same team as one of the tied players, most goals against the second place goalie. Continue down the goalie ranking until no goalie is associated with a player.
    • In the event of a tie between goalies: Most saves against the top player. If the top player is from the same team as one of the tied goalies, most goals against the second place player. Continue down the player ranking until no player is associated with a goalie.
